Last night we hosted our first ever (virtual) information session as a school. It was our Grade 8 to 9 Transition Information Session. This topic is an interesting one for parents and students alike. The change between elementary school and secondary school can sometimes seem confusing. Suddenly, students choose their courses, start earning credits, and require prerequisites for certain courses. These are all unfamiliar things coming from either elementary school or a homeschooling environment.
With over 20 years of combined experience in education and secondary school administration, we understand that this transition can feel overwhelming. We want to mitigate any apprehension or concerns and make this transition as smooth as possible!
During the session last night, we explained what is required from students in order to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
To earn the OSSD, students must earn 30 credits, 18 of which are compulsory and 12 are optional credits. Students must also complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Requirement and 40 hours of community involvement.
We provided all attendees with a graduation requirements checklist to use as a guide as they progress through high school. This document will help students to keep track of what they have completed and what they have left to complete.
In addition to this guide, we also did a quick tour around myBlueprint – a career/life planning tool that all Christian Virtual School students have access to. With this tool, students can plan their secondary school pathways and work towards their goals with concrete visuals rather than abstract ideas.
Any questions or concerns about course selection, prerequisite requirements, or remaining credits can be directed to our excellent administration and guidance team members.
If you missed this session, don’t worry! We’re hosting another on May 6, 2021 at 7PM. Stay tuned for registration details.
