French Program
As with all of our materials, our online French courses were created as a comprehensive package that includes lesson material, assessments, interactive activities, videos, and tools to track student progress. All of our French courses align to the Ontario curriculum and cover every expectation, while putting the content in a Christ-centred worldview.
Course Details
Elementary courses do not require a prerequisite and enrollment is typically based on the age of the student. If you have any questions on what level best suits your family’s needs, reach out to our guidance department for support.

Course Outlines
Aligned to Grade 4 Curriculum
Unit 1: C’est moi!
In this introductory unit, students will learn some basic vocabulary and sentence structures so that they can describe themselves in French through speaking and writing. Students will also learn about French-speaking communities in Ontario and see the similarities and differences between them and their own communities.
Unit 2: La vie quotidienne
In this unit, students will learn about the day-to-day lives of francophones by studying cultural traditions and the vocabulary used for everyday activities and objects. Students will explore vocabulary that has to do with houses, families, and clothing. Students will learn about different locations around town and how to follow instructions in French. This will be followed by learning more numbers and French and how to use that knowledge to create lists and schedules. Finally, students will dive into the months and seasons in French.
Unit 3: Les festivals
In this unit, students will read about francophone festivals in Ontario that take place throughout the year, and explore songs, poems and dialogues. Students will learn how to order off of a menu in French.
Unit 4: La nature qui nous entoure
In this unit, students will explore the natural environment that surrounds them. Students will begin in the forest, where they will learn how to describe the animals that live there. Students will identify the parts of each animal and learn about what they eat. Then, they will explore the parts of a plant and understand what plants need to survive. After moving from the land, students will dive into exploring the lakes and rivers of Ontario. Student swill learn how to write a letter from start to finish.
Aligned to Grade 5 Curriculum
Unit 1: C’est moi!
In this unit, students will focus on their likes and dislikes. Students will start by growing their knowledge of the French language by learning new ways to describe themselves. Students will also learn how to talk about their hobbies and plans for the weekend. Students will learn about strategies to help them when talking to someone, like what tone of voice is polite. Students will also work on their listening strategies.
Unit 2: La musique
This unit will explore the French names for instruments and listen for them in songs. Students will discover some traditional songs from Quebec, and explore how feelings change as they listen to a variety of music in different genres.
Unit 3: La météo
This unit will focus on the weather. Students will learn how to say the date in French and plan a calendar for their activities. Students will identify the purpose of texts like weather reports. Students will learn weather expressions for different seasons and which kind of activities happen in different types of weather. Students will also learn what goes into creating a travelogue and use a variety of strategies to help them read and listen to descriptions about the weather in French.
Unit 4: Les biographies
In this unit, students will learn how to write a biography. They will begin by learning how to describe people using adjectives about their personalities. Then they will explore the characteristics of a biography. They will learn about the steps of the writing process, how to gather and organize information through online research, and how to write a draft and revise it. This unit will result in a good copy of their very own biography.
Aligned to Grade 6 Curriculum
Unit 1: C’est moi!
In this unit, students will learn how to ask different forms of questions using a variety of gestures to help listeners understand them. Throughout the unit, students will listen, speak, read, and write in French.
Unit 2: Le nord
In this unit, students will practice listening strategies and vocabulary strategies. Students will learn how to understand new words in French and practice their fluency. Students will also demonstrate their understanding of oral texts, and identify and determine the purpose and audience of various text forms. Students will identify characteristics of different texts, including poems and magazine articles as well as learn how to describe Francophone culture in northern Canada.
Unit 3: Une grande fête!
In this unit, students are immersed into a party theme, exploring the tasks and lists they may encounter when planning a party. They will learn numbers between one and one hundred in French to help them read and write about money. Students will practice reading aloud, and will learn about formal and informal language. Students will also learn how to take notes while listening in French.
Unit 4: Les contes et les légendes
In this unit, students will find out the difference between a legend and a fairy tale. They will practice their reading skills to learn some traditional French-Canadian tales. They will investigate two French-Canadian cultures, the Métis and the Acadians. They will also practice their listening.
Aligned to Grade 7 Curriculum
Unit 1: Je suis unique!
In this unit, students will learn about being unique. They will discover French email-writing, interactive speaking, telephone protocol and more. Students will learn using everything from unusual sports to graphic novels.
Unit 2: En voyage
Students will discover places where Francophones live in the US, South America, off the coast of Canada, and in the Caribbean. Students will encounter new cultures and consider their arts and music, language, festivals, activities, and food. Students will also look at connecting their personal experiences and their community to what is being taught about these exciting cultures. Student swill spend some time reading airport signs and create their own travel poster.
Unit 3: La vie quotidienne
In this unit, students will practice following and giving instructions. They will become familiar with a few forms used to give instructions, and try writing them. Students will also explore menus and experience what it is like to eat at a French restaurant.
Unit 4: L’environnement
This unit will have students reading brochures on respectful environment practices, listening to public service announcements, and writing a proposal on protecting their communities. Students will express their agreement or disagreement on hot environmental topics.
Aligned to Grade 8 Curriculum
Unit 1: Nous sommes tous uniques
In this unit, students will learn how to use reading and listening strategies to understand descriptions of hobbies and interests. Students will get the chance to write about their favourite hobbies and interests, and how to plan and present about these topics. Students will also read and write about places in their community. They will have the chance to explore famous French speaking locations in Europe, and learn how to use vocabulary and expressions when describing a location they have visited.
Unit 2: Le’Europe
Students will develop their French by exploring French-speaking Europe, learning about the monuments and organizations as well as famous citizens. Students will discover what makes each place’s culture unique.
Unit 3: Le média et la technologie
In this unit, students will look at social media and technology and its role in their lives today and tomorrow. Students will use their speaking skills and learn how to write French text messages.
Unit 4: Les sports
In this unit, students will explore sports vocabulary and expressions. They will get comfortable using sports vocabulary words and expressions while talking, and will explore reading and writing sports magazine articles.
Required Resources
These course are entirely online and do not require nor rely on any textbook. Students will require the following resources, however, to complete all of the activities within the courses:
- A scanner, smart phone camera, or similar device to digitize handwritten or hand-drawn work
- A smart phone camera or similar device to take pictures of student work
- A device to record audio
- A printer
- A physical binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
- Various household items to complete offline activities
