Earth Day has been an event since 1970, occurring on April 22nd each year with a goal to empower individuals with the information, the tools, the messaging, and the communities needed to make an impact and drive change.
Over the years there have been several themes: Water for Life, Healthy Environments for Children, It’s Our Turn to Lead, and Trees for Earth, among others.
This year’s theme is “Restore Our Earth”. As Christians, we are entrusted with the care of the earth. We are responsible for how well we take care of and respect it.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1:26 (NIV)
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”- Genesis 2:15 (NIV)
From the very beginning, it has been our duty and calling to be stewards of the earth.
How can we restore our earth? There are a multitude of ways, both at home and individually – it is as simple as recycling, reusing, cleaning up litter from your neighbourhood, and purchasing ethically sourced, sustainable items.
If you want to get even more involved, here are some ways:
- Calculate your carbon footprint and turn it into a forest
- Donate to plant a tree
- Plant a forest
- Start a wildflower garden to help the bees
- Try a simple act of green
- Become a citizen scientist
- Act on plastic pollution
- Donate to and Buy From Thrift Stores
How will you help restore our earth?
